In Search of an Identity:
A Personal Introspective Look

I felt compelled to write this book for a simple reason. I have always felt refuted if not rejected any time I introduced my Nationality. From a young age in my country of birth, Haiti, I had to prove to people that I was Haitian. I used to be called “Ti Blanc” which means “Little White” or “The Outsider”.

Today, as an American citizen, the situation has gotten worse. The Haitian community in the United States does not believe me when I tell them that I am Haitian. The American community does not believe me when I tell them I am American, because of my English accent. So what am I?

About The Author

Mr. Bayard was born in Diquini a suburb of Port-au-Prince, Haiti in 1947. He moved to New York in 1964. He returned to Haiti for fifteen days for one of his brother’s wedding in 1969. He received great insights into his country of birth and of his family heritage from his father a career military officer.

While assimilating into the foreign culture of his adopted country, he felt compelled to delve into his own culture to better understand himself. His multiethnic heritage of Taino, African, and European cultures has always been a mystery to him.

Mr. Bayard is a retired teacher with a 38-year career in the United States. He is married to the love of his life Patricia, and has a son Raymond, two grandchildren Nicholas and Rose. He resides in New Jersey.

“An incredible work of research. A profound, deep, and engaging look at Haiti's compound dichotomy. An excellent research tool for my books”
